Study in Canada from India

India is the largest source of international students in Canada, with over 300,000 Indian students enrolled at Canadian institutions. With world-class STEM programs, extensive co-op opportunities, and a massive and supportive Indian community, Canada offers Indian students an unmatched combination of academic excellence and immigration potential.

Why Indian Students Choose Canada

Thousands of students from India choose Canada every year. Here are the key reasons why Canada stands out as the top study destination for Indian students.

Largest Indian Student Community

Canada is home to over 300,000 Indian students, making it the largest international student community in the country. Cities like Toronto, Vancouver, Brampton, Surrey, and Edmonton have thriving Indian communities with temples, gurdwaras, restaurants, grocery stores, and cultural events.

STEM Excellence & Co-op Programs

Canadian universities are globally recognized for STEM education. Co-operative education programs at institutions like Waterloo, UBC, and Toronto allow students to alternate between classroom study and paid work terms, gaining 12-20 months of professional experience before graduation.

Affordable Compared to USA & UK

Canadian tuition fees are 30-50% lower than comparable programs in the United States or United Kingdom. With the ability to work part-time during studies, many Indian students can partially self-fund their education while gaining valuable Canadian experience.

Strong Immigration Pathways

Canada’s immigration system favors international graduates with Canadian education and work experience. Indian students who complete their studies and gain PGWP work experience have strong prospects for permanent residence through Express Entry or Provincial Nominee Programs.

Popular Programs for Indian Students

These programs are especially popular among Indian students studying in Canada, offering strong career outcomes and immigration potential.

Computer Science & Software Engineering

Canada’s thriving tech industry needs skilled developers, engineers, and data scientists. Programs at Waterloo, U of T, UBC, and Carleton offer co-op placements at companies like Shopify, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, with starting salaries of $70,000-$100,000 CAD.

Data Science & Artificial Intelligence

Canada is a global leader in AI, with Montreal, Toronto, and Edmonton forming the ‘AI Triangle.’ Indian students can study under pioneers like Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio while accessing research opportunities at MILA, Vector Institute, and Amii.

Mechanical & Electrical Engineering

Canadian engineering programs are accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), and graduates can pursue licensure as Professional Engineers. Co-op programs provide 16-20 months of paid work experience before graduation.

Business Analytics & MBA

Indian students are increasingly drawn to Canadian MBA programs that combine business strategy with analytics and technology. Rotman, Ivey, Schulich, and DeGroote offer strong ROI with average post-MBA salaries exceeding $100,000 CAD.

Healthcare & Nursing

Canada faces a severe healthcare worker shortage, creating opportunities for Indian students in nursing, medical laboratory science, and health informatics. College programs offer faster pathways to employment with strong job placement rates.

Supply Chain & Operations Management

Canada’s position as a major trading nation creates demand for supply chain professionals. College and university programs in supply chain management offer practical training with strong employment outcomes and eligibility for PGWP.

Study Permit Process from India

Follow these steps to obtain your Canadian study permit from India. We recommend starting the process at least 4-6 months before your intended program start date.

1

Receive Acceptance from a DLI

Apply to a Designated Learning Institution and receive your official acceptance letter. Indian students should verify their institution is on IRCC’s DLI list and check SDS eligibility for faster processing.

2

Consider the Student Direct Stream (SDS)

Indian students may qualify for the Student Direct Stream, which offers faster processing (typically 20 calendar days). SDS requires an IELTS score of 6.0+ in each band, a GIC of $20,635 CAD, and first year tuition payment.

3

Arrange a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)

Purchase a GIC of $20,635 CAD from an approved Canadian financial institution (SBI Canada, ICICI Bank Canada, Scotiabank, etc.) as proof of living expenses. This money is returned to you in monthly installments after arrival.

4

Submit Online Application

Apply through the IRCC online portal. Upload your acceptance letter, GIC certificate, proof of tuition payment, IELTS results, valid passport, passport photos, and any additional documents.

5

Biometrics at VFS Global

Visit a VFS Global Application Centre in India (New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Kolkata, etc.) to provide your fingerprints and photo. The biometrics fee is $85 CAD.

6

Receive Decision & Travel

SDS applications are typically processed within 20 days, while regular applications from India take 7-12 weeks. Upon approval, collect your documents and present them at the Canadian port of entry.

Living in Canada as a Indian Student

Practical information about daily life in Canada for students from India, including community, costs, employment, and cultural adjustment.

Indian Community & Cultural Life

Canada’s Indian community is one of the largest diaspora populations worldwide. Cities like Brampton, Surrey, and Edmonton offer extensive Indian grocery stores, restaurants, temples, gurdwaras, Bollywood screenings, and cultural festivals like Diwali and Vaisakhi.

Cost of Living

Monthly living costs range from $1,200 to $2,500 CAD depending on the city. Many Indian students share accommodation to reduce costs. Cooking Indian meals at home is very affordable with access to Indian grocery stores across all major cities.

Part-Time Employment

Indian students can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic term at $15-$18 CAD per hour (minimum wage varies by province). Popular jobs include food delivery, retail, tutoring, campus employment, and customer service positions.

Weather & Lifestyle

Canadian winters require preparation — temperatures can drop to -30°C in some regions. However, cities like Vancouver have milder winters. Indian students are advised to invest in proper winter clothing and learn to enjoy winter activities like skiing and skating.

From Student to Permanent Resident

Canada wants international graduates to stay. Here is your roadmap from Indian student to Canadian permanent resident.

1

Complete your program at a DLI and apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) valid for up to 3 years based on program length.

2

Gain at least one year of skilled Canadian work experience in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 category.

3

Achieve strong IELTS scores — CLB 9 (IELTS 7.0+ in each band) maximizes your CRS points in Express Entry.

4

Create an Express Entry profile for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and enter the draw pool.

5

Boost your score with Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) — Ontario, BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan have international graduate streams offering 600 additional CRS points.

6

Receive your Invitation to Apply (ITA) and submit your permanent residence application within 60 days, including police clearance from India.

7

Indian graduates with strong language scores and Canadian experience regularly receive ITAs with CRS scores in the 470-510 range.
